Description
Developing an understanding of time is a difficult concept for younger children. One of the most confusing parts of understanding time with students is the use of the calendar. One way to make your calendar time more meaningful is to connect to the tools you are already using to build number sense. When you use a horizontal calendar, or a number line, to show the days in the month, the students will make connections to order, counting, numbers and patterns.
How to Use this Resource:
- This can be used with the At Home Calendar or alone.
- Students can drag the month of the year and the day of the week.
- The days of the month are written like a number line. This is purposeful. This is so the students can get more exposure to number lines, and don’t have to worry about the return sweep that can be very confusing!
- The students can count, predict the day and drag the box off of the day to reveal the number underneath for each of the months.
- There is a target number spot on each slide. This contains a text box so the students can record the ways they would make the day of the month. For example the 15th of March, the target number is 15. They could write 5 x 3, 10 + 5, 20-5, etc.
