Fact Fluency Through Subitizing: Multiplication & Division

If we want students to build number sense, computation strategies and fact fluency, we need to design lessons and tasks where students EXPLORE and DISCOVER the strategies. 

The person doing the thinking and talking is doing the learning.

Number Strings are an effective way to get students to explore and discover a computation strategy.

The purpose of a number string talk is to guide students down the path so they discover a specific computation strategy.

How to Use this Resource:

• Show a slide- students tell how many dots they saw and how they saw them.
• Repeat with the next slide, and then students should discuss connections and patterns between the slides.  Make sure to record the numbers and equations as students share their thoughts, so that students can connect the visual with the abstract.
• The key piece is for students to discuss the connections and patterns between the slides.  By noticing connections and patterns, students can make predictions and conjectures about computation strategies.
